Supporting Wildland Fire Operations with Professional Emergency Medical Care

Ambulance resources play a critical role in protecting the health and safety of firefighters and incident personnel during wildland fire operations. Operating in remote, rugged, and challenging environments, these resources provide essential emergency medical care, patient stabilization, and transportation capabilities when timely medical intervention is critical.

The NWSA Medical Services Chapter recognizes the importance of qualified ambulance personnel, properly equipped response vehicles, and consistent operational standards in supporting wildland fire incidents nationwide.

Professional Medical Response

Ambulance resources assigned to wildland fire incidents provide essential medical support, including:

  • Emergency Medical Care: Providing Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) services appropriate to personnel qualifications, medical direction, and applicable regulations.
  • Patient Assessment & Stabilization: Delivering timely assessment, treatment, and stabilization of injured or ill firefighters and incident personnel.
  • Emergency Transportation: Supporting safe and effective patient transportation to appropriate medical facilities when authorized and operationally appropriate.
  • Incident Medical Support: Integrating with Incident Management Teams, Medical Units, and other assigned resources to support incident medical operations.
  • Operational Readiness: Maintaining trained personnel, properly equipped ambulances, and deployment readiness for extended wildland fire assignments.
  • Firefighter Health & Safety: Supporting medical response needs associated with heat-related illness, injuries, environmental exposure, and other hazards encountered during wildfire operations.

Advancing Ambulance Resource Standards

The NWSA Medical Services Chapter is committed to advocating for professional standards, appropriate resource qualifications, operational consistency, and improved coordination between ambulance providers and wildland fire agencies.
